Dark Romance? What Kind of Sick, Twisted People Write This Mess?

Dark romance you say? But isn’t romance supposed to be sweet stories that make you swoon? Not here it’s not, well, I mean you may swoon, but you will feel wrong for said swooning. Dark romance is raw and gritty. It is not for those who are faint of heart, or have weak gag reflexes. Many dark romance books are centered around themes such as captivity, non-traditional sex, psychopaths, and murderers…anything that could go bump in the night. Basically, take horror and throw some steamy sex in there. That ladies and gentlemen is dark romance.

Okay, so it sounds twisted, right?

Yes, it is twisted, but that’s what makes it so good. It’s wrong in every way, it makes you question your own sanity, but it is a thrill. It’s okay to read these books because, hey, at least you aren’t the sick, demented person writing them, right? Nod your head. Right! You’re completely sane. It’s those authors who right these messed up stories we need to worry about. They’re crazy, mad, insane.  I mean what kind of person has plots like this just floating around in their head?

Me! Hi there! I am one of “those” authors with the sick brain.

If you’ve read Wrong or Wrath, or seen the cover for Absolution (due out in January) you may wonder what is “wrong” with me and my co-author LP Lovell. I can assure you we are completely safe to be around most of the time. In fact, we actually look like nice people.

Are we sick in the head? Possibly, but I think more than anything we enjoy writing the darker side of the human psyche. We like the challenge of making a reader swoon over a character that is in no way swoon worthy. We thrive from the shock value of our latest plot. We are the adrenaline junkies of the romance world, and all we want to do is take you for a ride on the dark side. No need to be afraid or concerned for our well-being. We’re just normal people with creepy imaginations.

So does romance belong in these darker reads? Of course! Romance can fit in anywhere. Just think of how different Michael Myers would have been if someone would have loved him for what he really was, a psycho with a knife.
